magnesium for pregnancy and postpartum

We focus a lot on nutrients needed to keep baby healthy, but we need to make sure MAMA is healthy too. Magnesium is related to over 300 enzymatic reactions in the body, and can help relieve many common pregnancy and postpartum conditions (swipe to see a few!)

Over 50% of women in North America don’t consume enough magnesium rich foods to meet their daily needs:

  • Foods are lower in magnesium content than they used to be due to soil depletion

  • Certain foods and drinks, such as caffeine, alcohol and sugar, deplete our magnesium stores.

  • Stress increases the rate at which we burn through magnesium stores in our bodies

  • If we have issues with digestion, our bodies cannot adequately absorb the magnesium we do get through food.

Supplementing is recommended for many women, particularly if experiencing any of the symptoms included here, as well as when breastfeeding.

Magnesium has the benefit of being relaxing and can help with sleep, so it is a great supplement to take before bed.
